A 30-second Italian TV commercial has left Brazilians outraged just two days before the World Cup as it showed Rio de Janeiro’s iconic Christ the Redeemer statue dressed in an Azzurri shirt.
In the clip, the towering statue of Christ is seen in a No.10 shirt with the word "Italia" written on it.
According to the Huffington Post, the Catholic Church in Brazil is incensed by Italy state broadcaster Rai's digitally-manipulated stunt, saying it is "disrespectful and inappropriate."
The Italian broadcaster is now facing threats from the Archdiocese of Rio, who wants to sue the network for damages between £4 million - £6m.
In comments made to the O Globo newspaper, Rodrigo Grazioli, a lawyer for the Brazilian Church said: "The Archdiocese is deeply offended.”
"It’s as if Brazilian TV were to make a commercial in which mulatto girls engaged in lewd behavior with the gladiators of the Colosseum."
