Mortar shelling of central Damascus has killed 12 people and injured at least 50, Syrian state media reported.
The barrage of four mortar rounds hit Shaghour neighborhood of the Syrian capital, the SANA news agency said. Two of them hit the Badr al-Din al-Hussein technical institute.
The shelling comes a day after President Bashar Assad submitted papers for upcoming presidential election.
He is the seventh person running for the election scheduled on June 3 and is the favorite in the race. If re-elected, he would have to step down after serving the new term under the new Syrian constitution adopted in 2012.
The Syrian government forces have been lately pushing back militants, who seek to topple Assad. Still bloodshed continues for a fourth year now in Syria, causing one of the worst humanitarian disasters in recent history. (BY RT)
